Studies in Language Testing 1: An Investigation into the Comparability of Two Tests of English as a Foreign Language

Product Description
This publication documents a major study, which compares the Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) with the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and investigates similarities in test content, candidature and use. While these tests were designed to measure many of the same abilities, they represent radically different approaches to language test development reflecting deeper differences between educational measurement traditions in the US and UK. The thorough investigation of the fundamental characteristics and operational utility of two of the most widely used English tests for foreign students makes this volume a valuable contribution to language testing research. It will be of particular interest to test users, language test developers and researchers…. More >>

Buddhist Philosophy: A Historical Analysis

Product Description
This introduction to Buddhism examines its basic philosophical teachings and historical development, setting forth complex and significant ideas in a straightforward and simple style that is easily accessible to the student. The author’s orientation is philosophical, rather than religious or sociological. This approach is both the uniqueness and the strength of the work. Part I outlines the historical background out of which Buddhism arose and emphasizes the teachings of early Buddhism. By comparing the earliest Buddhist literature in both the Pali Nikayas and the Chinese Agamas, the author has established the common base of earliest Buddhism most free of sectarian rivalry. Topics such as epistemology, causality, existence, karma, morality, ethics, and nirvana are discussed in detail. Part II examines developments in the history of Buddhist thought and the emergence of the various schools of Buddhism. The development of Abhidharma is stu… More >>

The Study of Foreign Languages in the Choson Dynasty

Product Description
Korea has had a long history of training official interpreters in foreign languages. Modeling after the Koryo institution, the Choson government established the Bureau of Interpreters, Sayogwon, in 1393, one year after the inauguration of the dynasty. Since then, this bureau was maintained for five hundred years as the unique institute for training in foreign languages in Korea and as an office of the Choson government which was responsible for supplying all the official interpreters for diplomacy. In the Sayogwon, the four languages-Chinese, Mongolian, Japanese, and Jurchen (later replaced by Manchu)-were taught and textbooks and glossaries for the study of the languages were published and revised in the later periods. Those books extant today are invaluable sources for the historical study of the four languages. In the first part of the present study the history and institutional features of the study of foreign languages in the Choson dynasty are dis… More >>

Music, in a Foreign Language

Product Description
Set in an imaginary police state in contemporary Britain, this novel explores the complex friendship between a physicist and a historian, two men linked by a secret history of political and sexual dimensions. When they come under the scrutiny of a state investigation that pits one man against the other, their lives and their friendship are changed forever.Amazon.com Review
You can’t accuse Andrew Crumey of playing it safe with his first novel. It’s sprawling, intricate, moody, crazed, philosophical, and oddly introspective. Despite a wealth of plot lines–among them the confused lineage of Duncan Waters, the love affairs of physicist Charles King, and a story of beautiful strangers on a train–the book also finds time to develop a discussion of Italian surrealist writer Alfredo Galli, who may or may not have created many of the plot lines attributed to the narrator. Ultimately, Music in a Foreign Language becomes a work of meta… More >>
